What you need to do

  • Send your return to us with your original signed copy or new completed form so we receive it by the due date on the notice.
  • Review your notice to determine which return we need from you.
  • If you have a copy of the original return, send it to us with the original signature.
  • If you don't have a copy of your original return, visit Forms & Instructions to complete and sign a new return to send to us.

You may want to

  • Review your records to ensure we didn't send the original return back because of missing signatures or missing information.

What happens if I don't respond by the due date?

We may consider your return delinquent and begin collection enforcement to secure the return.

Note: Statutes of limitations for assessing, collecting and refunding tax.

Need help?

  • You can authorize someone to contact the IRS on your behalf.
  • If you can’t find what you need online, call the IRS number on your notice or letter. If you didn’t receive a letter or notice, use telephone assistance.
  • If you can't resolve the penalty on your own, contact Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent organization within IRS.

What to do next

  • Write down the date on the letter today.
  • Look the number up on irs.gov yourself. Don’t trust a link or phone number from anyone else.
  • If it says you owe money or proposes changes to your return, take it to a licensed CPA, EA or tax attorney before that date.
