Tax year 2025 · federal · general information
How far back can I claim a refund?
How long you have to claim a refund for an earlier year.
There is a clock
- A claim for refund is not open forever. The statute sets a window and it closes.
- The general rule runs from the later of two points: the date you filed the return, or the date the tax was paid — each with its own period.
Why this bites people
- Tax withheld from your pay is treated as paid on the return due date for that year, not the day it left your paycheck.
- So an unfiled year quietly runs its clock while nothing appears to be happening.
Fixing a year you already filed
- You change a filed return by filing an amended return for that year.
- The same statutory window governs it.
What it turns on
- which tax year you are asking about
- whether a return was ever filed for that year, and on what date
- when the tax for that year was actually paid
- whether anything suspended or extended the period for you
What would make it not apply
- the statutory period for that year has already closed
- you are relying on a date you cannot substantiate
